COMMUNICATION – Expresses ideas and concerns clearly in both oral and written format; listens effectively.

Core Questions:

  • Think back to a project or situation where you needed and desired to gather information or input from others.  Tell me how you went about gathering information.  What worked well?  In hindsight, what would you change?
  • Tell me about a time you negotiated successfully so that it became a win/win situation.
  • Rank in order the following groups according to your success in communicating with them: upper-level management, customers, peers, and direct reports.  Why do you rank them in that order?
  • Think of a situation in which miscommunications caused a problem.  What was the situation and how did you handle it?
  • What are some of the techniques that you use to be an effective listener?

Enhancer Questions:

  • Give me an example of when your verbal communications have been important enough to follow up in writing.
  • What types of written communication do you compose on a regular basis?  Have you received feedback on your writing?
  • Tell me about a presentation that you wish you could do over again.
  • What kinds of things do you do to prepare for an oral presentation?

INITIATIVE – Self-starter, seeks greater responsibility, willing to take ownership, resourceful and persistent.

Core Questions:

  • Tell me about a situation where your manager was unavailable and you took the initiative to make a decision.
  • Tell me about a time when there was a decision to be made and no procedure existed.
  • What proactive steps have you taken to increase the output of your position?
  • Tell me about a time when you took the responsibility for a situation that had negative consequences.  What did you learn from the situation?

Enhancer Questions:

  • How would describe the amount of structure, direction, and feedback that you need to excel?
  • How do you prefer to take direction?
  • Tell me about a time when you went “above and beyond the call of duty.”

ADAPTABILTY – Willingness to help wherever needed, flexibility.

Core Questions:

  • Give me some examples in your present or former jobs where flexibility was necessary to get the job done.
  • How would your manager rate your ability to cope with last minute change?

Enhancer Questions:

  • What happens when two priorities compete for your time?

  • How have you had to reinvent or redefine your job to meet your company’s changing needs?

DEPENDABILITY – Follows through on assignments; promptness in completing tasks.

Core Question:

  • We’ve all missed a deadline in the past.  Describe a situation when you missed a deadline.  What did you learn from it?

Enhancer Questions:

  • Describe a time when your dependability earned you recognition or praise.
  • Tell me about something you started but couldn’t finish.

Enhancer Question:

  • Have you ever made a risky decision that resulted in a loss?

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT – Demonstrates mastery of new tasks and responsibility quickly; stays current in new technologies; seeks development opportunities.

Core Questions:

  • In working with people we often find that what works with one person does not work with another.  Can you give me a specific example of a time when you had to vary your style to suit a certain individual?  How did it work out?

Enhancer Questions:

  • How does (or did) your position impact the overall goals of your department or company?
  • Describe a time when you were a member of a team that experienced difficulties.  What did you do to help reverse the trouble?  What was the result?
  • How did you handle a situation in which one or more team members were not doing their share or where hindering group progress?

MANAGING SKILLS – Ability to arrange total activity in logical and practical assignments.  Develop personnel to be successful and assume greater responsibilities.

Core Questions:

  • Describe a situation in which managing was particularly challenging for you.  How did you overcome these challenges in order to accomplish your objective?
  • How do you typically measure your staff’s performance?  How do you determine when employees are going beyond the requirements of their job?
  • What steps do you take to address employee performance issues?
  • How have you developed your employees to be successful and assume greater responsibility?
